FORT BLISS, TEXAS — Sunlight is one thing that our area has over most of the nation. The abundant sunshine in El Paso is helping Fort Bliss personnel march closer to their goal of providing enough clean and sustainable energy to power the base. Commanding General Maj. Gen. Dana J. H. Pittard has set a high mark for Fort Bliss's "Net Zero" strategy to completely power the base by 2015 with a combination of technology and increasing efficiency. A ceremony today marked the installation of the first set of solar panels of thousands that are being installed in a previously vacant lot beside the 1st Armored Division Headquarters. Once complete, the solar panels will make 1.4 megawatts and be used to power the headquarters building and could produce up to 5% of the base's current annual power demands. Future projects include installation of rooftop solar panels on a larger scale, which will generate about 10 times as power as this array, potentially 13 megawatts.
