Assistant Head Coach Jeff Woodruff has resigned to take the head coaching position at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, Calif. announced head coach Mike Price on Friday.
Woodruff, who served eight years (2004-2011) on the coaching staff, was also the tight ends coach.
“This is an outstanding opportunity for any coach to take over at a top-five high school program in the United States,” Price said. “We will miss Jeff and his family immensely. I will miss him personally because of his help to me, most importantly, his advice, knowledge and expertise. He will always be a member of the UTEP family as his two sons are UTEP graduates. We will always love the Woodruffs. I wish them nothing but the best. ”
Woodruff recently tutored Conference USA All-Freshman selection, Eric Tomlinson. Tomlinson registered six catches for 83 yards. Kevin Perry also had a stellar performance under Woodruff’s tutelage, posting 17 catches for 203 yards, the best effort from a tight end since 2008. Perry, Tomlinson and Craig Wenrick recorded 27 receptions for 391 yards and scored five touchdowns in 2011.
In 2008 Jamar Hunt parlayed a solid senior season into a free agent signing with the Dallas Cowboys. Hunt was third on the team in catches (31) and receiving yards (367).
Woodruff coached the tackles and tight ends in 2007. Under his guidance, right tackle Oniel Cousins blossomed into a first team All-Conference USA player and was chosen by the Baltimore Ravens in the third round of the NFL Draft.
Woodruff doubled as UTEP's safeties coach and special teams coordinator from 2004-06. During that span he oversaw the development of free safety Quintin Demps, a first team All-Conference player in 2006 and 2007 who is now with the Houston Texans.
