EL PASO, TX — El Paso won back the World Middleweight Championship, but the tug of war continues between the city and the University of Texas System chancellor. Local leaders spoke out Friday about the chancellor's ban on alcoholic beverages at the fight.
"El Paso you're heavy weights and on the 16th of June, we're gonna be the proud hosts of one of the most exciting fights," said Bill Blaziek with the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Everyone is anticipating the Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr versus Andy Lee fight at the Sun Bowl next month.
Just a week ago, the UT chancellor overturned his decision not to have the fight in El Paso but city officials are not letting up. Now they want the alcohol ban removed.
U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes sent a letter to the the UT Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa asking to overturn the alcohol ban.
"This is a great venue, this is a safe venue and we ought to be able to have this event without any restrictions," said Rep. Reyes.
UT Austin held a boxing match just last weekend and fans were able to buy alcohol there.
"It's hard to argue especially with UT having a fight last weekend on their campus and selling beer. It's kinda hard to segregate us that way," said State Rep. Dee Margo.
Rep. Margo, along with other state delegation, are making pleas to the UT chancellor.
"Whats gonna happen if in fact we did not have beer sales,” said Rep Margo. “What are people going to do? They're going to load up before they come in or they're going to sneak it in or both and to me you have more concerns on crowd control and security with that scenario."
Like Rep. Margo, long time boxing promoter Bob Arum is optimistic.
"I am very confident that I'll be drinking a Tecate cerveza the night the fight takes place," Arum said.
HBO will televise the bout to 170 countries around the world. It's a great chance for all El Pasoans to show what the sun city is made of.
"The best way we can celebrate our pride in community is to fill Sun Bowl stadium on June 16 and I challenge you to bring as many friends as you can we'll fill the Sun Bowl, we'll show the world how exciting this community is," said Blaziek.
Tickets for the fight go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. Tickets can be purchased at the UTEP Ticket Center, all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com and by phone at (915) 747-5234.
