EL PASO — City leaders celebrated a big victory Tuesday. The Chavez vs. Lee fight will be at the Sun Bowl on June 16. It was a week-long battle to keep the bout in El Paso after the UT chancellor cancelled it for unnamed security reasons.
The city fought long and hard to knock out any bad-mouthing about the Sun City.
It was only a week ago that the UT Chancellor cancelled the boxing fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee. Mayor John Cook sais this made him take off his boxing gloves and fight for the city of El Paso.
Boxing promoter Lester Bedford said not even the "top rank" promoter shared those concerns. Bedford also mentioned that in the years he's been doing this, he had never seen a city make a statement the way El Paso did.
