EL PASO — The victory bell has rung for El Paso.
In a public boxing ring fighting over the host title of the Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. vs. Andy Lee fight, the Sun Bowl will wear the belt. The City of El Paso and the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau unanimously agreed to partner with Top Rank, Inc. as a sponsor of the June 16, 2012 World Middleweight Championship fight.
A $4.5 million economic boom is anticipated from the event from tourists and temporary jobs associated with the event. An estimated 2,000-3,000 boxing fans will travel into El Paso from other cities, and more than 40,000 spectators are expected to attend the event.
The Chavez vs. Lee fight will be televised worldwide in over 170 countries and available to over 1 billion homes.
“This is an incredible opportunity to showcase El Paso with a domestic and worldwide audience,” said William Blaziek, General Manager of the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We are excited as is the El Paso community to have this fight secured for El Paso, to show the world who we are and what we can do.”
