EL PASO - El Pasoans Fighting Hunger is asking people to vote for the city in the final hours of a Facebook competition that would award the winner $1 million.
In a rough economy where people are sometimes unemployed for extended periods of time, putting food on the table isn't always easy.
"Somewhere today a child is going to bed hungry," said Ruben Sanchez, Executive Director for El Pasoans Fighting Hunger.
Sanchez said the $1 million donation from Walmart, who has committed $2 million to fight hunger in communities with the highest rates of unemployment, would go a long way.
"A dollar can be translated into $11 through our network," Sanchez said. "$1 million turns into $11 million."
The process to vote is simple. Log onto Facebook.com/walmart and click on the "Fighting Hunger Together" tab. From there find the state and click on the city and vote for El Paso.
El Paso is currently fourth in the competition and will qualify for a $50,000 donation as long is it remains in the top 20.
Sanchez said he hopes El Pasoans will take to Facebook and make up the nearly sixty thousand votes required to jump into first place.
"I think our community can step up and help us feed the hungry," Sanchez said.
Voting ends Monday at 9:59 p.m.
