Four Aggie tennis players collected 2012 All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) honors during the league banquet held at the Danny Villanueva Victory Club inside the Fulton Center Thursday evening.
Men's senior Matej Stakne earned first team All-WAC honors in singles. His Aggie teammates in junior Luis Ramirez and sophomore Marc Westgate claimed second team All-WAC honors in doubles.
On the women's side, NM State senior co-captain Manon Sylvain earned second team All-WAC recognition for singles.
Stakne's conference award is the second of his career after garnering second team All-WAC honors in doubles with partner Jim Brouleau in 2011. The honor is the first WAC First Team award for any Aggie since 2009 on the men's side. It is also the second WAC First Team accolade all-time in singles for an Aggie player since Brice Magnanou claimed the initial honor in 2006.
Stakne finished the regular season with a 16-16 record overall in singles, playing primarily at the No. 1 position where he won eight contests during the dual match season.
The conference accolade in doubles is the first in the careers of Ramirez and Westgate. The award marks the fifth straight season that an Aggie doubles team was recognized by the conference at the end of the year.
The Aggie tandem came together towards the end of the season to record a 5-3 overall record at the No. 1 doubles slot. In conference play Ramirez and Westgate posted a 1-1 record on the season.
"It's nice to see these guys recognized for their hard work," men's tennis head coach Carlos Vargas said. "I'm happy for Matej to receive this honor in his senior year. For Marc and Luis I think this is a good incentive to make next year even better."
Sylvain's conference award is the second of her career but first in singles. She earned second team All-WAC honors for doubles with partner Sophia Marks in 2010. The Aggie senior was also recognized in 2011 as a member of the WAC All-Tournament team.
In 2012 Sylvain posted a 16-12 overall singles record. Playing solely at the top singles position in dual matches this season, Sylvain recorded an 8-8 record and went 1-2 in conference matches during the regular season.
Earlier on Thursday Sylvain claimed the team match point for the Aggies in their 4-2 quarterfinal win over San Jose State.
"I'm very proud of Manon for earning another WAC award especially after her great win today," women's tennis head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "It's great that all of the coaches recognize that she is one of the top players in the conference. She has played No. 1 singles in every match this year and has competed extremely well during her Aggie career."
Both Aggie teams take the court on day two of the WAC Tennis Tournament at the NM State Tennis Center on Friday. The NM State men open their postseason against Nevada at noon in a quarterfinal match. The Aggie women face top-seeded Fresno State in a semifinal match slated for 3 p.m.
