The Sun Bowl may not be the site of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Andy Lee but there is still hope for El Paso to host the fight. NewsChannel 9 spoke with Top Rank Thursday and were told promoter Bob Arum was impressed by the outcry from the community and city officials when the UT Chancellors declared the Sun Bowl, as well as the UTEP Campus, unfit to host the match due to security concerns. Due to the response from El Paso, Arum and Top Rank said they are hopeful they can find an alternative venue in time for the June 16th event and Cohen Stadium has emerged as the leading candidate.
Mayor John Cook confirmed that the city council was drafting a proposal that send the HBO televised fights to the home of the Diablos. Arum said he would move forward with fight in El Paso if he can get that proposal by Friday. Otherwise, promoters are prepared to move the event to the Toyota Center in Houston.
