Abie Han is an undefeated El Paso boxer, but hasn't fought in his hometown in nearly two years. Han was on the undercard in a light middleweight bout against Joseph Gomez. Han is 16-0 with 10 knockouts, while Gomez is 18-5 with 8 knockouts. Han was hoping, like all El Paso boxing fans, that he would be in the Sun Bowl on June 16 on the undercard of the Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.-Andy Lee bout, but the University of Texas System Administrators put a stop to the fight on the UTEP campus, siting a high security risk.
Han was not pleased. "Yeah, when I heard that... Security... It was kind of bogus, I realized they are using any excuse they could not to have it in El Paso. El Paso is one of the safest cities in the world, and you're telling me we can't have a fight here? We have had football games, basketball games here, at UTEP, with no problem." Han is still training with Louie Burke, of Las Cruces.
Han will still fight on the undercard, just not in El Paso. Thursday afternoon, a decision is expected on where to hold the bout between Chavez-Lee, in either Houston or San Antonio.
