UTEP will have a chance to start anew when it challenges Marshall in the opening-round of the 2012 Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Memphis at 9 a.m. MT Thursday.
The Miners (2-17) will be the 12th seed while the Thundering Herd (12-9) earned the fifth seed. The victor will advance to take on fourth-seed host & No. 64 Memphis at 9.a.m. MT Friday.
“The ladies are healthy and are good to go,” UTEP head coach Victor Aguilar said. “We’re excited to go to the conference tournament. We are going to play our best and see what happens.”
UTEP will be vying for its initial victory at the league championship since 2009.
The top performer throughout the season for the Orange and Blue has been Marie LeBlond, who stands at 21-9 overall. That effort puts her tied for 10th on the single-season victory list. LeBlond also paces the team in dual-match triumphs, sporting a record of 13-6. Much of that work has come at No. 6, where she went 11-3.
Rebeca Calvillo has buoyed LeBlond by forging an overall mark of 15-10, including a solid showing of 9-7 at the demanding two position in singles play.
Dariya Abdrakhmanova is coming on strong at the right time, with back-to-back victories. Overall she is now 14-15, including 8-10 in dual play. Perhaps most impressive is that while she is 4-7 combined at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots, she does have a mark of 4-3 at No. 4.
Martina Trierweiler has held down the top spot throughout the campaign for UTEP, and she is coming in with momentum having picked up a win in the regular-season finale against Southern Miss. Gabi Vazquez should also see action. She has had a rough patch of late but is still 4-6 in her past 10 matches.
