New Mexico State soccer head coach Blair Quinn announced the 2012 schedule that includes eight home matches. The fall slate features four NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago and two rivalry matches.
"It's definitely a more challenging schedule than we've had here yet, with four teams from last year's NCAA Tournament, and six teams that finished in the top 80 of the NCAA RPI rankings," Quinn said. "We also have several difficult non-conference road games, which should help us when we get into WAC play."
This fall, the Aggies are hosting matches in their new facility, the Soccer Athletic Complex, which is located between the Coca-Cola Weight Center and the NM State Softball Complex.
NM State meets eight teams for the first time in school history, when the Aggies face UC Riverside (Aug. 31) and Southern Utah (Sept. 2) in Riverside, Calif., Sam Houston State (Sept. 7) and CSU Bakersfield (Oct. 14) in Las Cruces, and new WAC members, Denver (Oct. 12) and UTSA (Oct. 21) in Las Cruces, Texas State (Oct. 19) in San Marcos, Texas, and Seattle (Oct. 26) in Seattle, Wash.
The Aggies officially open the 2012 season in the Boise State Tournament against the host Broncos (Aug. 17) and Idaho State (Aug. 19). NM State hasn't played either program since the 2010 season and has a 1-1-0 record against Boise State and 0-1-1 record against Idaho State.
After an off weekend, NM State meets UC Riverside and Southern Utah in the UC Riverside Tournament. The Aggies then host Sam Houston State in the home opener. NM State hosts Weber State (Sept. 9) and look to avenge last year's 3-0 loss.
The Aggies are looking for its first win over I-10 rival UTEP (Sept. 12) in Las Cruces. Last year, the Aggies fell 2-0 in the season opener.
"We have some familiar faces on the schedule again with UTEP, UNM and Texas Tech," Quinn said. "Then we have the four new conference opponents in Denver, Seattle, Texas State and UTSA, which I think have immediately helped raise the profile and quality of the league, as well as putting WAC soccer into three more major metropolitan areas with Denver, Seattle and San Antonio. I'm looking forward to another very exciting season."
NM State travels to Missoula, Mont., for a meeting with Montana (Sept. 14), who won the Big Sky Conference last year. The Aggies and Grizzlies tied 1-1 in double overtime in the 2010 season opener in Las Cruces.
The Aggies continue the road trip at New Mexico (Sept. 16), a 2011 NCAA Tournament participant, in Albuquerque. NM State has a 0-2 record against its in-state rival. The Aggies also travel to Lubbock, Texas, for the second straight season to play Texas Tech (Sept. 23). The Aggies were edged 1-0 in 2011 in the first-ever meeting.
NM State opens 2012 WAC play at home with a pair of matches against 2011 WAC Tournament Championships Utah State (Sept. 28). The Aggies are 0-3 against USU following a 2-0 loss in Logan last year. NM State finishes the opening weekend against San Jose State (Sept. 30). The Aggies lost a 2-1 double overtime heartbreaker in 2011 and have a 0-2-1 series records versus the Spartans.
The Aggies travel to Louisiana Tech (Oct. 7) and look for their first victory in the series. NM State returns to Las Cruces to host Denver and then CSU Bakersfield in a non-conference match.
NM State resumes WAC play at Texas State, who played in the 2011 NCAA Tournament after winning the Southland Conference Tournament. The Aggies host UTSA in the home finale before traveling to Seattle (Oct. 26) and Idaho (Oct. 28). The Aggies and Vandals are 1-1-1 in the first three meetings after a 1-1 double overtime draw last year.
NM State looks to return to the WAC Tournament (Nov. 1-4) for the second consecutive season. This year, Utah State is hosting the conference tournament in Logan, Utah.
