The UTEP track and field team concludes action at the Don Kirby Invitational on Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.
El Paso native Juan Blanco took gold in a photo finish in the men’s 800m. The freshman posted a time of 1:53.55 out running Alexander Korn from West Texas A&M.
Senior Matt Dudley takes first place in the men’s discus registering a mark of 51.38m (168-07).
Freshman Abiola Onakoya took bronze in the men’s 400m clocking in a time of 46.96. Teammate Curtis Kock also competed in the 400m and finished fourth overall with a time of 47.11, while Kristian Dillard posted a personal-best of 48.62.
Anthony Wright was the first Miner to cross the finish line in the men’s 100m posting a time of 10.71, while senior Suji Adeniyan registered a time of 10.91.
Ramon Garcia was the eighth collegiate runner to cross the finish line in the 1,500m recording a time of 4:04.04. Wrapping up the men’s side was freshman Elphas Maiyo who competed in the men’s 3,000m and registered a time of 8:56.57 taking fifth-place at the meet.
On the women’s side, Jackline Ekai finished first out of 42 runners in the 800m with a personal-best of 2:13.47.
Janice Jackson crossed the finish line seventh overall in the women’s 200m with a personal-best time of 24.37.
Representing the Miners in the women’s 400m hurdles was Samantha Sharper and Jallycia Pearson posting times of 1:03.68 and 1:04.47, respectively.
On the field, freshman Taylor Gunn took fourth-place in the discus with a mark of 43.41m (142-05). Teammate Aisha Lee finished seventh with a toss of 39.55m (129-09).
UTEP will return home to host the UTEP Invitational on Saturday, April 14 at Kidd Field scheduled to start at 10 a.m. (MT).
The New Mexico State University track and field team concluded competition in the Don Kirby Invitational on Saturday, April 7, with the Aggies winning two events on the day.
Junior LaSasha Aldredge continued her impressive season with strong finishes in the 200m and the 400m. Aldredge finished first overall in the 400m with a time of 54.33, which was just a fraction of a second from breaking her personal best and the current all-time school record of 54.17. Aldredge also finished fourth overall in the 200m with a time of 24.29. Aldredge's time in the 200m is a new career-best for her, and still keeps her spot at seventh all-time for NM State.
Junior Kelsey Brennan also finished first overall in the javelin throw with a mark of 40.75m. Brennan finished first of a group of Aggies who dominated the javelin.
Freshman Tiffany Gerber finished second overall with a mark of 39.14m and freshman Nicolette Serraro finished right behind in third overall with a mark of 38.55. Serarro's mark in the event placed her ninth all-time in the NM State record books.
In other notable Aggie finishes, senior Melanie Clay finished fourth overall in the 800m with a time of 2:15.09. Senior Jndia Cleveland finished fourth overall in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.53. Cleveland also finished fifth overall in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.22. Cleveland also finished fourth overall in the long jump with a mark of 5.89m. Sophomore Alishia Perkins ran the 100m and the 200m for the Aggies, finishing seventh overall in the 100m with a time of 12.00 and fifth overall in the 200m with a time of 24.32.
In the relay events, the Aggies finished second overall in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:50.40 (Meade, Clay, Aldredge, Cleveland). In the 4x100m relay, the Aggies finished seventh overall with a time of 47.02 (Perkins, Aldredge, Jenna Banegas, Kendra Walker).
The Aggies will travel to El Paso, Texas, for the UTEP Invitational on Saturday, April 14.
