LAS CRUCES — Mayor Ken Miyagishima will honor Las Cruces boxers’ Ayanna Vasquez,17, and Edmund Guzman, 16. The recognition is in light of Guzman winning the Silver Medal and Ayanna Vasquez winning the Bronze Medal at the 2012 USA Boxing National Tournament held in Fort Carson, Colorado in early March 2012.
Vasquez and Guzman were two of 11 fighters representing New Mexico and were the only two from New Mexico to place. This is the first time Vasquez or Guzman have fought in the USA National Tournament as Men's/Women's Open fighters. As Junior fighters, Vasquez was a nine-time national champion and Guzman a state champion.
Guzman and Vasquez both fight out of the Las Cruces Police Athletic League (PAL) Boxing Club. A program that takes at-risk youth off the streets and teaches them discipline through boxing. Guzman is a junior at Onate High School and Vasquez a senior at Las Cruces High School. Both were heavily featured in a documentary recently produced on Las Cruces PAL called "Let's Shine."
The event will be held on April 7th at 2 p.m. at the VFW 6917 Raymond L. Green Post located at 5845 Bataan Memorial West in Las Cruces.
Mayor Miyishima will also acknowledge the support from VFW post 6917, which recently donated $1,500 to the Las Cruces PAL Boxing Club to help sponsor trips for the boxers. Afterwards the festivities will continue with a light sparring session with Vasquez, Guzman and other PAL boxers. The VFW will provide lunch and refreshments.
