Wow, what a start for the Dallas Cowboys! Today, the NFL announced the Cowboys and Giants will kick off the 2012 season in a Wednesday night game on Sept. 5.
The NFL moved this year's opener up a day to avoid a conflict with President Barack Obama's planned speech at the Democratic National Convention.
According to the many around the league, the NFL hasn't played a game on a Wednesday since Sept. 22, 1948, when the Rams faced the Lions. The game will be played right here on NBC Newschannel 9, with a 6:30pm MST kickoff.
This will mark the third straight year the Cowboys open with a nationally-televised game. The past two years the Cowboys have played on the first Sunday Night Football game, also televised on NBC Newschannel 9.
Last year, the Cowboys lost to the Giants in the final regular season game, 31-14, for the NFC East division title. The Giants used that win as momentum for a Super Bowl winning run, culminating in a victory over the Patriots. Dallas finished the season 8-8 overall. The two teams have faced each other five times on opening day, with the Cowboys owning a 5-0 advantage.
