LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A man suspected of striking a 2-year-old child who was throwing a temper tantrum has been arrested and charged with abuse.
Las Cruces Police were called to Memorial Medical Center where a 2-year-old boy with scrapes and extensive bruising to both sides of his face was taken by his mother and her boyfriend, Adrian Delgado, 22. Delgado had initially told his girlfriend that the injuries occurred when the child fell in the bathroom.
Health professionals at the hospital believed the bruising was suspicious and were not consistent with an accidental fall.
Las Cruces Police investigators subsequently determined that Delgado struck the child several times with an open hand after the boy threw a temper tantrum. Delgado then called his girlfriend, who was at work at the time, and fabricated the story about the boy falling in the bathroom.
The boy’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Delgado was arrested Friday and is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
