The Aggie baseball team plays six games this week with two on the road and four at home. NM State opens with a midweek series in Tucson, Ariz., against nationally ranked Arizona, Tuesday and Wednesday, March 20-21. Tuesday's game is set to start at 5pm (MT) and Wednesday's game begins at 3pm (MT). The Aggies take on Texas-Pan American in a four-game series that starts, Friday, March 23 at 6:05pm at Presley Askew Field. Saturday, March 24 will feature a doubleheader starting at 3:05pm and Sunday's series finale begins at 1:05pm.
Promotions: This weekend at Presley Askew Field is "Rec League Weekend" with all kids wearing their jerseys or T-shirts getting into the game for free. Sunday's game will feature T-ball opening ceremonies with over 30 teams celebrating the opening of their season. Hot dogs will be fifty cents that day and there will be post-game autographs with the Aggies.
About the Aggies: The Aggies head into week six of play riding a six-game win streak. The Aggies took two of four games from 2011 NCAA Tournament participant Kent State to start the streak and continued it with a 6-2 win over in-state rival New Mexico, March 13. NM State then took three games at home over Southeast Missouri State. The Aggies are 7-3 in their last ten games and 15-8 overall.
NM State was the 2011 NCAA batting average champion when it posted a .337 average. NM State is 13-3 when playing in Las Cruces and 1-3 on an opponent's field. The Aggies hit .347 at Presley Askew Field and only .220 on opposing team's turf. The Aggies lead the nation in runs scored, walks and RBI. NM State is also in the top five nationally in hits, doubles, on-base percentage and total bases.
The Aggies hit .333 as a team in four games last week with junior Kyle Phillips leading the way going 8-of-15 at the dish in four starts. Pitchers Adam Mott and Ryan Beck combined for 19 strikeouts and two wins in the doubleheader against SE Missouri State, March 17.
THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS
Arizona: Arizona heads into this week's play ranked fifth in Baseball America's poll and ranked 14th in Collegiate Baseball's Top 30. The Wildcats are 16-4 and have won their last 11 of 13 games. Arizona split a midweek series against Rice, March 13-14.
This will be the first meeting between Arizona and NM State since 2002. In that meeting the Aggies lost 14-10 in Tucson.
Texas-Pan American: The Aggies will return home after two games in Tucson to host Texas-Pan American for a four-game series, March 23-25. Texas-Pan American heads into the week with 9-1 record after recently defeating No. 8 Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
