EL PASO — A mother of a soldier killed in Afghanistan was honored in this afternoon for her courage and inspiration.
Yvette Dushane's son Airman Daniel Sanchez was killed in Afghanistan in 2010. The Lady's Auxiliary in El Paso is honoring her and her son's bravery.
"That was the hardest thing I've ever had to do as a mom. I never thought my son was going get a one way ticket out there,” said Dushane.
Yvette Dushane recalls the moment that she learned of her son Daniel's passing.
"5:30 in the afternoon. We just had dinner and they rang the doorbell. My little boy answered the door. He is like, ‘Mom there is a lot of soldiers at the door,’ and I knew. My heart just sank,” said Dushane.
Yvette says it was the strength of the people around her who were able to help her get through the tough time.
"God worked in his beautiful miraculous way and just sent all his angels, and my family and friends and neighbors who just lovingly put their arms around me and my house was full of people. I was not left alone,” said Dushane.
The Lady’s Auxiliary wanted to honor Yvette as a Gold Star Mother because of the sacrifices her family has made for our country.
"We started getting together and that's why we are here, to honor our Gold Star Mother. Anybody that gives their lives for our country, I think it's worth inspiring and having recognition,” said Auxiliary President Roselia Valasquez.
Yvette says that it's the support from friends and family that makes her a proud mom.
"They have not let anything, a day go by without somebody telling me we are thinking of you. We are thinking of him,” said Dushane.
Airman Daniel Sanchez was 23-years-old when he passed after serving just seven weeks in Afghanistan.
