Top-seed UTEP will square off against Southern Miss in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Conference USA Women’s Basketball Championships at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse at 4 p.m. MST Thursday. The game will be broadcast on 1150 AM in El Paso, and fans can also get updates by following the Miners on Twitter.
The ninth-seeded Lady Eagles (13-17) stomped No. 8 seed UCF (12-17), 71-49, in an opening-round game on March 7, to set-up the showdown with the Miners (26-3). The effort continues the late-season surge by Southern Miss, which is 7-2 over its last nine games.
Jamierra Faulkner (16.7) and Tanecka Carey (15.2) paced an impressive attack during the regular season which accounted for 60.4 points per game on the second-best field-goal percentage (40.6) in the league.
UTEP won the 2012 C-USA regular-season title – its second in the past five years- and was one of four squads to receive a first-round bye in the tournament. It leads the all-time series against USM, 6-4, which was aided by a 70-63 road victory in the only meeting between the squads this season on Jan. 26. The Miners started the second half of that game on a 12-2 run to not only erase a 30-28 halftime deficit but also take a lead they would never relinquish.
C-USA Sixth Player of the Year, first-team All C-USA and All-Defensive Team honoree Gloria Brown posted a monstrous double-double (27 points, 19 rebounds) to lead the way in that win, with Kelli Willingham (13 points) and Kristine Vitola (12 points) also reaching double figures.
