UTEP sophomore guard Kelli Willingham has been tabbed to the five-member 2012 Conference USA Women’s All-Academic Team, the league office announced Thursday afternoon. Willingham, who has a 3.83 cumulative GPA in kinesiology, is the first Miners since 2007-08 (Natasha Lacy) and second overall to earn placement on the prestigious squad.
She helped lead UTEP (25-3) to its second C-USA regular-season crown in the past five years, in addition to the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament (March 7-10). The Academic Medal winner paces UTEP and rates second in C-USA in three-point shooting percentage (39.8) with 47 makes.
She has also contributed 7.7 points and 2.6 assists per game, while being the only player on the squad to earn more than 25.0 minutes per game (25.9). One of the team’s tri captains, she has committed two or fewer turnovers in 20 of the 28 games despite being one of primary ball handlers on the team.
Willingham and the rest of the Miners will cap their fantastic 2011-12 regular season by playing at UAB at 6 p.m. MST on Thursday, March 1. The game will be broadcast locally in El Paso on 1150 AM.
