The New Mexico State women's tennis team hosts its Rio Grande Rival, University of New Mexico, in the rivals' annual matchup at 3 p.m. Friday at the NM State Tennis Center.
The Aggies (5-3) have won four straight matches after notching a 7-0 win over UTPB on Sunday at home. The Lobos (4-2) are also coming off of a 7-0 blanking of Western New Mexico on Saturday in Albuquerque.
NM State head coach Ivan Fernandez guided the Aggies to their first road win in the rivalry since 2001. The Aggies have won two straight over the Lobos after the 4-3 win last year in Albuquerque. The Crimson and White rolled UNM 6-1 during the foes' last meeting in Las Cruces in 2010, snapping a seven-match Lobo win streak in the series.
Aggie senior co-captain Natalia Salum remains undefeated at 7-0 in singles this season. Fellow co-captain Manon Sylvain won her third straight singles match for the Aggies at the No. 1 position on Sunday to improve to 4-2 on the year.
Sylvain is ranked No. 17 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional rankings. UNM's Michaela Bezdickova stands No. 9 in the same rankings.
Bezdickova carries a 4-2 record for the Lobos at the No. 1 position. Susanna Kuuttila carries the same record at the Lobos' No. 2 slot this year.
UNM's No. 1 doubles team of Bezdickova and Alyssa Caffey is 2-1 this season and 3-1 together on the courts this year.
