LAS CRUCES - A new fire station opened in West Las Cruces today providing faster response times and allowing other stations that covered the region before to focus on more calls within the city.
The Las Cruces Fire Department opened Fire Station 7 Sunday morning. The new station located at 8861 Trigg Loop facility is temporary until the permanent facility at Zia Boulevard and Crawford Road is completed in the fall of 2013.
Fire Station 7 will service the West Mesa including the airport and the far west city limits. Fire Station 3, nearly a dozen miles away, covered the area before.
Las Cruces Firefighter Nathan Beyer said the new station will provide faster response times.
"From valley to the airport is probably 9 to 11 minutes," Beyer said. "So now obviously that will be cut down to a much shorter one to two minute response time."
The Las Cruces Fire Department graduated an academy of 15 new firefighters Saturday that will service the new station. Their positions have already been paid for with money from the SAFER Grant awarded to the department last year.
The department is also expected to ask the city to budget for a new fire engine in the next fiscal year and construction on the new facility will begin in the next couple of months.
