Sunland Park, N.M. — Two raids in the city of Sunland Park involved City Hall and the home of mayoral candidate Daniel Salinas Friday morning. According to an affidavit for the search warrants released Friday evening, the investigation surrounds extorion claims made by mayoral candidate Gerardo Hernandez.
Hernandez told police that an unknown male approached him outside of City Hall on February 16th saying a video of him involved in sexual activity would be released if he did not drop out of the mayoral race.
Surveillance video at City Hall shows the city's Public Work's Director saying to the City Manager," They are coming... get rid of the video."
Hernandez told police a reporter from Juarez named Jose Reyes was in his office to discuss a possible job. Reyes brought with him a female who began to take off her clothes and engage with sex acts with Hernandez.
New Mexico State Police seized computers and brown bags from the City Hall building that were sent off in Las Cruces police cruisers.
In a separate raid the same morning, authories entered the home of Sunland Park mayoral candidate Daniel Salinas. Among the items seized were his personal computer, an iPAD and his truck. Officials would not comment on the motive behind the raid.
Salinas is running against Gerardo Hernandez, the mayoral candidate at the center of a political sex-scandal surrounding the political race. Hernandez alleges Salinas was using the sex scandal to get him to drop out of the race.
