St. Pius Church — EL PASO-Today marks the beginning of Lent, the 46 days leading to Easter Sunday and many people who haven't been to church for a while were back for Ash Wednesday.
Ash Wednesday is a special day for Catholics. Their parish priest blesses them with ashes on the forehead symbolizing the person's humble spirit and obedience to god. News Channel Nine visited St. Pius catholic church.
"Today's a special day for us because we begin our journey towards Easter and the journey towards Easter..it's a time for us to become a new person, said St. Pius Pastor Arturo Banuelas.
"This is a start for people that have gotten away from the church that they can come back and start with those beliefs that they've had as children or when they were younger," said church-goer Mike Trejo.
Lent is traditionally a time of personal sacrifice but some have expanded their view of what it means.
" It's helped me to be more aware of what god has given us, so we can have an open heart and more love," said church-goer Florenzio Martinez.
Whatever you give up remember that the point is to use self control and focus more on your priorities, faith and life goals.
All Christians are encouraged to practice some kind of spiritual disciplines or sacrifice during lent whether it be more prayer, or by giving up something that you truly enjoy.
