UTEP garnered 35 votes, 13 more than last week, while staying steady at 28th in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ top-25 poll released Tuesday. The Miners (24-2, 13-0 C-USA) have secured votes in both major polls for five straight weeks, with that vote tally increasing each week.
UTEP started 10-0, lost two games by a combined three points, and has won 14 straight since. The current winning streak ties as the second-longest in program history.
At 13-0 in Conference USA play, the Miners are ensured of at least of a share of the league title. Their magic number to clinch the crown outright is one, with it being one victory over the final three games or a loss from second-place Memphis. Due to owning the tiebreaker with the Tigers, UTEP will be the top seed at the upcoming C-USA Championships (March 7-10).
The Miners will play a pair of home contests this week. They will play host to SMU at 7:05 p.m. MST Thursday. There will be free admission to the contest as part of the week-long celebration on campus for National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
The Orange and Blue will then challenge Rice in their “Senior Day” game at 2:05 p.m. MST Sunday. It will be the third and final “Grand Prize Giveaway Game” of the season, and one lucky fan will win an iPad2.
