The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has named the UTEP men’s cross country team a 2011 Division I All-Academic team on Wednesday morning.
The men’s squad achieved a cumulative team GPA of 3.14 in the 2011 season. The Miners finished second in Conference USA with Justice Chirchir taking first-place with a time of 23:39, while teammate Elkana Rotich took second crossing the finish line with a time of 23:51.
A total of 147 institutions represent 30 conferences that compose the group. UTEP was one of four Conference USA schools named an all-academic team. Rice, Tulane and Memphis were the other C-USA schools honored. To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
