EL PASO – El Paso’s ‘Big Brother’ volunteer Phil Robinet was named Texas’ Best Big Brother in Texas for 2012. Robinet is currently the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of El Paso’s landlord and board president. He also acts as the ‘Big Brother’ to ‘Little Brother’ Matthew, 12, with whom he was matched in October 2009.
“We hit it off right away. He was really witty and clever right from the start,” Robinet said. “But we’ve really bonded and cemented our relationship even more since then.”
Once shy and struggling in school, Matthew’s grades now have improved to A’s and B’s, according to BBBS. He’s become much more assertive and self-confident, and has learned how to deal with problems he was having, like being bullied.
Robinet gives any credit of his award right back to his Little Brother.
“I truly feel I get as much or more out of this friendship than Matthew does,” he said.
The BBBS El Paso said it is only through the support and donations from our community that they are able to continue “making life-changing matches like these.”
