It's not only gyms that are seeing an increase in membership. Stores that sell exercise equipment say this is their busiest time of year. We visited the Fitness Superstore in West El Paso to see what the latest in workout equipment.
"January through March, we see an increase in people coming in," said Fitness Superstore sales representative Luis Valverde.
The Fitness Superstore carries everything from medicine balls to the latest high-tech exercise equipment. "We're a specialty store, so we do focus on high-end equipment, so I think that's what the difference is between a sporting good store," said Valverde.
Valverde tell us gyms, schools and hospitals get their workout gear from here. "We have a lot of equipment that you can actually test out, try it out, see what you're looking for and see if that's what you want to have at home," said Valverde.
Valverde says going to the gym on a regular basis might be hard for some people. "Some of them do start, register but work, family, takes over us, so I think owning a piece of equipment in your own home makes it a lot easier. It benefits you more," said Valverde.
The most recommended equipment at the Fitness Superstore is the elliptical machine, which gives your body an overall workout without putting too much stress on your joints. The Octane is one of their top sellers.
"If you don't want to work your legs, just sit on the side and you just work on your arms. If you want to work your legs and you don't want to work your arms you just get off and you work on your legs. So it gives you different options," Valverde demonstrated.
Something else that just came out: the Eliptigo. "It's like a regular bike without the seat. You can ride it outside. And you'll see in a couple of months you'll start to see these a lot," said Valverde.
The Eliptigo works your legs and lower body and is great for cardio and resistance work. "You have different speeds, different resistance on it," he added.
Another highly-recommended piece of equipment -- the Cybex Arc Trainer, which is more like a stepper. "It gives you more of a motion on your quads, on your legs, your hamstrings. It comes with the TV if you want it. You can actually plug in your iPod or your iPhone. You can control everything with the buttons now," Valverde said.
And the latest in exercise bicycles runs you through your workout. "Because it'll do it automatically for you. It'll walk you through a whole program instead of going to the gym and listening to an instructor."
Valverde says if you don't know which machine you need, they're more than happy to help you figure out what you need to reach your goal. "Is it what you're looking for to lose weight or to gain muscle or toning or flexibility and then we take you through steps and trying out different equipment to see what you're need are," said Valverde.
The fitness superstore also repairs broken down exercise equipment. They're located at 7410 Remcon Cir # C5 in West El Paso.
