According to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll this week, the Chapin girls now rank as the #6 team in 4A for the State of Texas. Unfamiliar territory for an El Paso team, but at a perfect 22-0, 4-0 in district, very deserving. But such a high State ranking is a double-edged sword for Chapin becaues a single loss could send the lady Huskies plummeting in the rankings.
"Being from El Paso, you don't have room for error, we're punished as soon as any kind of loss happens, so they know they have to come out and the bullseye is on them," said head coach Marlene Webb.
The girls want to send a message to the rest of the State that they are not a flash in the pan and plan on making a deep run in the playoffs.
"Every time we play here, we have to think where we are trying to be at, which is farther than area," said Senior Captain Kristina Higgins, who will play at Baylor next season, the top ranked team in women's college basketball.
Higgins is the top player in the state but knows she can't do it alone giving all the praise to her teammates. The squad attributes their success to their hard work.
"We know we have a long ways to go, work hard every day and push hard in practice," said Senior guard Haley Winters.
They will get another test Friday when they hit the road for a rivalry matchup with Andress, a 7:15pm tipoff.
