All of El Paso celebrated when hometown hero Danny Olivas blasted into space two years ago. Now he's going to do it again. You remember when Olivas lifted off aboard the space shuttle Atlantis. We've known Olivas was headed back to space for more than a year now. NASA set his second launch for Monday, August 24th at 11:35 p.m.
Olivas' mission is to deliver spare parts and supplies to the International Space Station. That mission will end Saturday and Danny Olivas is set to visit the space station in a little less than a month.
We talked to Olivas' parents in El Paso a year ago when they first learned of his second trip into space. They're clearly proud of their son but at the same time fully aware that such trips carry risks.
Olivas grew up in El Paso and graduated from Burges High School and UTEP before fulfilling his life-long dream to become an astronaut.
