WEST EL PASO- A garbage truck driver is recovering from his injuries after his vehicle went up in flames. The driver got out before the truck was completely torched.
El Paso fire crews are trying to figure out just how it happened.
The El Paso Fire Department says that the driver heard a loud pop in the engine, so he pulled over. He got out of the truck, and then the vehicle became completely engulfed in flames.
The truck fire happened shortly after 8 a.m. off of Brentwood Avenue in West El Paso.
The fire department says eight fire trucks responded to the scene, and it took nearly two dozen firefighters to contain the fire.
The driver suffered minor burns to his arm, but fire investigators say it was the driver's quick thinking that prevented more serious injuries.
"Luckily he was on top of his game and he jumped out of that truck quick, and I think that is what prevented further injury. The burns on his arm weren't too bad, so yes he just out pretty quick,” said Ralph Reyes with the El Paso Fire Department.
The fire department says they are still investigating what caused the garbage truck to catch fire.
