Introducing art in a fun way. That's the goal of a Sunland Park winery, which offers a "Painting and Tasting" class. Participants get to try their hand at painting while sipping on savory wines. It's something both the instructor and those who have tried the class say is addicting.
"A lot of the students who have come into the class have never even picked up a paint brush so we wanted to introduce painting to them, show them how much fun it can be," said class instructor Martha Martinez.
Once a month, Sunland Winery in Sunland Park offers a class called "Painting and Tasting." "The wine always loosens you up," said class participant Kathy Ramsey with a laugh.
During the two-hour class, the instructor goes through everything participants need to know: from which brush and paint to use to how to blend in the colors. "I give you step-by-step instruction and you can follow my instructions or not. I give you the freedom. It is your painting. It is your piece of art," said Martha.
"We've done Mount Cristo Rey. We've done the Star on the Mountain, flowers, trees, meadows," said Kathy.
Kathy has been coming to the class since it first started nine months ago. She says she was hesitant to try it but after her first painting she was thrilled. "I thought it was wonderful! I gave it to my son!" said Kathy.
Besides the two glasses of wine that come with the class, snacks are also provided. Participants told us they love the laid-back atmosphere. "In between your wine, you step back from your painting. You have a little cheese, a little snack. It's just fun," said Kathy.
When the class ends, participants go home with their brand new masterpiece, which they can proudly show off. "A lot of us who have been coming for a long time have gifted them away or call them garage paintings," said Kathy. "I've put up all of mine in a cabin in Alto."
The "Painting and Tasting" classes are offered at Sunland Winery at 1769 Victory Lane. The next class will be held Friday January 20th at 6: p.m. and Saturday January 21st at 2:00 p.m.
