Spaceport America is the world's first commercial spaceport. Construction of the sleek building and hangars is complete and located north of Las Cruces.
Now they're hiring people to staff the spaceport. Richard Wagner is the site manager for New Mexico workforce connection. he says the spaceport will have a huge impact."When the spaceport finally gets completed we're looking at probably between 800-1000 jobs; not to mention the ones that are going on during the building, the construction of it." He says"there's so many things that need to be put into place because of it's location but it can be an attraction for the area and for the whole nation."
Spaceport America says it should be in business by 2013. Everyone seems to be looking forward to this new industry and the jobs that come with it.
Cynthia Vargas is unemployed and looking for a job here in New Mexico. "I'm here looking for a job. I think it will attract all kinds of people i think that especially here even though it's gonna be fifty miles away. I think people are gonna be really excited and intrigued by it."
Richard Wagner is optimistic for the future. " I think it's a great time to be a New Mexican obviously and to be a citizen in this area because it's like exploring the wild wild west."
Virginatlantic.com will post jobs on its website that will include everything from IT jobs to engineering jobs. Meanwhile, more than 400 people already have reservations for a trip into space at two hundred thousand dollars a ticket.
A Spaceport America spokesperson says that they are in a 20 year lease agreement with Virgin Galactic and he expects that more than two thousand jobs will be available in the next 5-years.
