The New York Mets signed Socorro High School grad and former Texas Ranger Omar Quintanilla to a minor league contract on Tuesday and invited the veteran infielder to spring training.
Quintanilla had one hit (a triple) in 22 at-bats over 11 games for Texas last season, his first action in the majors since 2009 with Colorado. He batted .298 and drove in 25 runs in 51 games at Triple-A Round Rock during 2011, but missed the beginning of the season while completing a 50-game suspension for violating the minor league drug prevention and treatment program in 2010.
The 30-year-old is a career .213 hitter with two home runs and 34 RBI in 227 games with the Rockies and Rangers.
