LAS CRUCES- A small act of kindness has left a local soldier speechless. Already the winner of a purple heart for wounds in combat, he'll pass this prize on to the person who keeps him going, his wife.
Those are the only words Mike Brewer could say when he opened the box.
"There’s a lot of amazing people out there and a lot of amazing soldiers and heroes, to be among the deserving, it's a privilege," said Mike Brewer, soldier.
Mike was deployed to Afghanistan a week after he was married and then every soldier's wife's worst nightmare happened.
"A rocket had hit my window and exploded it came in the vehicle and bounced around the cab with all the metal and everything and Ii couldn't help but think, ‘there has to be a God’,” says Mike.
Mike wrote his story in to a contest called "My Perfect Union" where the company, Union Diamond was giving away a $40,000 engagement ring to a member of the U.S. military and a check for $10,000.
Scott Anderson, the president of the company says when he read Mike's letter he was inspired.
"We tend to see people at their happiest time and just to be able to give a bit of light, it’s special," says Scott.
Mike wrote about his wife and how she has been his strength through it all.
"She’s gone above and beyond she's takes care of everything," says Mike.
"I didn't have any use of my hands whatsoever, for over four months and between all the surgeries, and everything else I was very incapable of helping out with the children," says Mike.
Scott says he wanted to find a way to give back to the troops, but most importantly the families they leave at home.
"I couldn't imagine what she went though as a mother and as a wife, I think she's the special person here," says Mike.
Mike Brewer is stationed at Holloman Air Force Base and drove into Las Cruces to meet with the jewelry executive. The two of them hope to remain friends and you've got to say, they’re off to a good start.
