A women's organization made sure students at a West El Paso school had a nice holiday party. Members of the Junior League of El Paso deliver bags of foods to the students every Friday, but this last time, they made this visit extra special.
Students at Roberts Elementary showed their enthusiasm during a quiz at the school's cafeteria. "We learned about the 5 different food groups," said student Fallon Hernandez.
Members of the Junior League of El Paso's "Food 4 Kids with a KIK" program visited the students Friday as they do every week to deliver bags of food.
"On the weekend, some of the children don't have anything to eat so we're trying to fill that void on the weekend by giving them snack bags with milk, cereal, vegetables," said Food 4 Kids with a KIK committee chair Rosalinda Lozano.
"I share with my little sister, my mom and my grandma," said Fallon.
On this day, in addition to the bags of food, the ladies held a presentation for the second and third graders.
"I'm here to present to the students the importance of eating all five food groups and that each food group does something specific for our bodies so they stay healthy and grow strong," said Food 4 Kids with a KIK member Nicole Anderson.
After the presentation students were eager to show what they learned as they had a chance to win special prizes.
In the end all of them walked away with presents to take home. "We've got stockings for the students to take home that have little playing cards and little CDs of Christmas music and some hints about staying healthy during the month of December," said Nicole.
"We got little lipgloss for the girls and cars for the boys, nothing very fancy," said Rosalinda.
But fancy or not, the students were grateful for the special celebration they got to enjoy.
"I have had some children come up to me and hug me as a way of showing their appreciation for what we do for them so that is very rewarding," said Rosalinda.
"I think they're so nice for doing this for us," said Fallon.
