UTEP soccer sophomore standout Azia Nicholson added another postseason honor to her collection by being named to the NCAA Central Region all-second team, it was announced Thursday afternoon. Eight different players have now accounted for 13 all-region awards in program history, with 12 of those distinctions coming during the Kevin Cross era.
“UTEP soccer is extremely proud of Azia to be recognized as one of the top players in the central region,” head coach Kevin Cross said. “This award is a great recognition because it is voted on by all the coaches in the region who played against UTEP Soccer. These coaches recognize Azia's hard work and value to the UTEP Soccer program. An individual award such as this one would not have been received without the success of the entire UTEP Soccer team."
Nicholson’s postseasons honors now include being a 2011 All C-USA second-team performer, a member of the C-USA all-academic squad and a 2011 Capital One Academic All-District® 7 first-team selection.
She also excelled on the pitch this year, playing a key role for the Miners. She tied for fifth on the squad in goals (four) and assists (three). During league action she was particularly strong, scoring three times. Nicholson started all 20 matches and logged the third-most minutes (1,736) on the team.
