EL PASO - The family of 83-year-old Alfonso Morales is in shock after his sudden death. He was hit and killed by a car as he walked to church Monday morning.
Police are still trying to piece together how it happened.
Morales may have been 83-years-old, but his family says old age didn't slow him down one bit. They say he was active in the community and he liked to help neighbors out by mowing their yards.
Hugo Morales spent the morning helping his brother clean out his father's apartment. He had just moved into it 4 months ago.
"He lived a good life he enjoyed what he did. He was a real hard worker," said Hugo Morales.
Alfonso Morales had recently started walking to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church right across the street. It's where he liked to have coffee and socialize with neighbors.
"He wanted to stay busy so when he found out they we're having this stuff at church he would go early in the morning," said Hugo Morales.
Alfonso Morales was on his way to the church around 6:00 a.m. Monday when he was hit by a car while crossing Alabama Street. Police say the driver, 68-year-old Angelica Gonzalez, kept going and slammed into a rock wall nearby. Morales later died at the hospital.
Police are still trying to figure out if Morales was in the crosswalk when he was hit, but his family thinks he was. They say he always used it when he walked to church.
Hugo Morales says his brother called him at work Monday morning and said his dad had been in an accident.
"I went to the hospital that's where they told me. It was shocking. I was hurting real bad."
Alfonso Morales leaves behind a wife and 9 children.
Police say speed and alcohol are not factors in the crash and Gonzalez has not been charged with anything.
We'll keep you posted on the investigation.
