EL PASO – El Paso Water Utilities says its been preparing for months for the first hard freeze of the season, but its asking customers to prepare as well.
Here’s what EPWU says it's done to better equip facilities:
-Repaired freeze damage to water plants from 2011 freeze
-Developed insulated boxes to help keep instrumentation from freezing
-Installed new instrumentation at many water tanks citywide
Here's what EPWU says you can do to prepare for freezes:
-Instulate exposed pipes and faucets
-Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors that are against outside walls to allow warmer air to circulate around plumbing
-Let cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes to prevent pipes from freezing
If pipes break inside your home, EPWU encourages you to immediately turn off your water at the meter to avoid further damage and avoid water waste. In February 2011, thousands of gallons of water were lost across the city when pipes on private property froze and broke. A step-by-step video explaining how to turn off you water at the meter is available at YouTube.com/EPWU.
