EL PASO- Thanksgiving Day Turkey grease can ruin sewage pipes, according to El Paso Water Utilities.
Grease should not be poured down drains because it solidifies when it is mixed with other waste. "Just like our arteries, if you put too much fats, oils and grease in a pipe that pipe will clog and if that pipe clogs it could back up untreated waste water into your house or into your street and nobody wants to spend their Thanksgiving day dealing with that," said El Paso Water Utilities Information Specialist Martin Bartlett.
Local plumbers tend to be busiest during Holidays, according to Jose Perez. He owns Allied Plumbing and has noticed that through the years, cooking grease is the most common culprit for clogged pipes. He started offering preventative plumbing to try and reduce the amount of emergency house calls on Holidays. "So we try and do the clean up before this happens as far as grease goes."
Grease should be thrown out in the garbage, definitely not poured down any kind of drain.
