Reservations to volunteer at a shelter?!
Well not likely, but Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter have the biggest turn out for volunteers. So many volunteers show up at their favorite shelters that sometimes finding work can be a problem. Reverend Julius Martin at the Mission El Paso expects 10-20 volunteers on Thanksgiving. That number is a confirmed, pre-arranged number because their facility is so small. The reverend says more volunteers would become counterproductive.
John Martin, the Community Relations Director for The Salvation Army in El Paso will never turn away a volunteer. He expects nearly 150 of them. If more show up he will find something for them to do. Coffee station, dessert station, cleaning station the list goes on and on at the Salvation Army. The pantry needs rearranging and donations can be sorted.
Taking in more volunteers or turning them away, the one thing both Martin's agree on is they would like to see this big turnout everyday of the year.
Give them a call. Reverend John Martin at Mission El Paso: 915-532-2575 or John Martin at The Salvation Army: 915-544-9811.
