El Paso - - An El Paso jury is trying to decide how to punish Michael Romero for murder.
They brought back a guilty verdict first thing in the morning.
Now, the trial has entered the punishment phase.
Today, the jury heard more testimony, this time to help them decide how long Romero will spend in prison.
The sentencing phase for Michael Romero got started a little differently than most, not with an explanation of who he is but with background on the man he killed.
The prosecution called foreward Leticia Rodriguez, the mother who Valentin Rodriguez, who was beaten to death at a party in Northeast El Paso two years ago.
With a smile on her face, she told the jury that Ray was very loving, smart, and excelled in all his after-school activities like sports and church choir.
During that testimony, Romero's family and friends waited quietly outside the courtroom not wanting to comment on the jury's guilty verdict.
Romero's father also addressed the jury.
He said his son has changed for the better in the past two years.
The sentencing phase of the murder trial resumes tomorrow.
