EL PASO, TX - A group called "Save the Stacks" is starting movement to save the iconic ASARCO smokestacks.
Dozens of people were downtown Tuesday night to exchange ideas about the possibility of saving the two remaining stacks on the former smelter site.
Demolition of the main stack was scheduled to begin soon but last week the site's trustee announced the new demolition date will be Feb. 2013, giving El Pasoans 16 more months to come up with the millions of dollars it would take to maintain them.
Proponents argue the stacks have too much historical value to tear down.
There will be another meeting to discuss the ASARCO stacks Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m. at the Downtown Public Library.
