EL PASO- It's hard to believe the month of November is already here and before we know it, Thanksgiving will sneak up on us. That's why we're doing a segment on getting ready for Thanksgiving and to give you some decorating ideas and tips.
As one of the top event planners shows us, you can have a beautiful table without spending a lot of money.
"If you're not a cook, you go to places that make a full turkey dinner, but if you put up a beautiful table, nobody cares what the food looks like," said event planner Caroline Whitmore.
Thanksgiving is not just about the food, but bringing that festive feeling to be table. The owner of Eventures by Caroline Whitmore, one of the top event planners in El Paso, says organization is key. "I will start my table setting on Tuesday or Wednesday of Thanksgiving week so that I am not busy doing all that craziness on Thanksgiving Day. I want to have fun. I want to enjoy my family and friends,” said Caroline.
The first step is to figure out if you're having a formal table or a casual one. "I think the dinnerware, crystal China thing separates it from the casual," said Caroline.
For a formal table, glittery pumpkins, a nice floral arrangement with some feathers thrown in and a decorative turkey add an elegant touch along with napkin rings and a knife rest. If you're doing a casual table, Caroline suggests that you work with what's around. "You go outside. You start trimming bushes that are sort of dying now. Those bushes are wonderful. You go and buy a few pumpkins at the store. You buy pinecones. You can use almost any organic thing from outside," said Caroline.
Dried corn, acorns, pine cones, pomegranates and a couple of vegetables add a splash of color to the table setting. And Caroline says it's always a nice touch to have something sentimental whatever your table setting may be. "I always take something that precious to me and put it on the table. Sometimes it’s pictures. It can be anything that you want it to be," said Caroline.
And whether you go with a formal or a casual setting, Caroline has a suggestion if you have a lot of guests. "When you have a big table, it's really nice to have name tags because people, especially if you're having guests, people really like to know where they should sit," she said.
Something else that will keep things organized is multi-purposing your tables and your plates. "This could be the place where they came in for hors d'oeuvres but that also serves for your pumpkin pie, your desert dishes," said Caroline.
And of course, don't forget to decorate your door. Put a wreath up and a couple of pumpkins.
Caroline says most importantly, enjoy this special day with those you love. "Always remember that this is a day of thanksgiving for all the blessings that we have. And always just stop and eat with your family. Let that be a memory for them," said Caroline.
