LAS CRUCES- The man accused of killing a prominent Las Cruces businessman has confessed to the crime.
New Mexico authorities say 25-year-old Mario Mendez was on the run for almost 2 weeks after the murder of realtor Jack Hadley on September 23rd.
During a news conference today in Dona Ana County, District Attorney Amy Orlando said a Crime Stoppers tip helped investigators track down Mendez at a gas station in Deming.
They say Mendez, who has no prior criminal record, broke into Hadley's home, in order to rob it. But the way they tell the story, Hadley confronted Mendez, and Mendez shot him several times, then Mendez set fire to Hadley's body and his home.
Mendez is in jail with no bond. He'll stand before a judge sometime this evening for his arraignment.
