EL PASO- The U.S. Marine’s yearly mission, the Toys for Tots campaign, kicked off Monday.
Members delivered boxes all over the Sun City where you can drop off a new, unwrapped toy for a child in need. They are hoping with your help, they can bring joy to tens of thousands of children in need in our area.
U.S. Marine Corps members in El Paso are launching this year's Toys for Tots campaign with the goal of filling all 600 boxes they're distributing all over the city.
“A lot of these children might not get a toy otherwise this Christmas. And just to see the hope and the joy it brings to them to know they're not going to be left behind this Christmas season. It's a big deal for us and it really makes it worthwhile,” said Staff Sgt. Lucas Conley.
They said last year, they had just enough toys to give out.
“Last year, we collected 45,000 toys. We supported over 21,000 children with toys last year,” said Staff Sgt. Conley.
With more children in need this year, they need for toys is even greater. Their goal for this year is to have enough toys for 50,000 children and they're hoping to collect 80,000 toys.
“The biggest part about toys for tots that makes it a success is the local community, the charitable nature that every El Pasoan has. They see the boxes out there and they do very well with filling the boxes with toys,” says Staff Sgt. Conley.
More than 200 drop off sites will be set up throughout the city making it convenient for people to donate, but the Marines want to expand the number of drop off locations. One way that businesses can help out Toys for Tots is requesting these boxes so that employees can donate toys at their place employment.
This year, the Marines are giving you another way to help out that does not involve going to a store to buy a toy.
“They can go to our website from home. All they have to do is search for Toys for Tots and go under the location for El Paso and you can make donation with your check, your debit card, with your credit card and all that money goes to El Paso Toys for Tots,” said Staff Sgt. Conley.
They hope adding this new feature and the generosity of El Pasoans, they'll be able to spread Christmas cheer to tens of thousands of more children in our area.
“We really call out to all the people of El Paso, all the businesses of El Paso to support us this year, as you do every year,” says Staff Sgt. Conley. “I believe wholeheartedly that with the help of El Paso citizens.”
The Marines will also be holding a number of fundraisers between now and December.
