SILVER CITY, NM- It's that special time again in the Gila National Forest. Shorter days, longer nights, crisp mornings, and cooler evenings mean Fall is coming and so are the amazing scenic views of Fall colors.
To help forest visitors find the best of the fall colors this year, the forest will be posting weekly updates to http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/r3/fallcolors on the best places to see the changing leaves. The Fall Colors Hotline can also be reached at 1800-354-4595; select option 3. The web site and the hotline will be updated every Friday, until the autumn colors are gone
“This is an absolutely spectacular time of year here,” said Forest Supervisor Kelly Russell. “I highly encourage people to come to the forest and see the beauty for themselves.”
The cooler temperatures and wonderful scenery also make it an excellent time to explore many of the hiking trails, lakes, and other attractions on the forest. Popular attractions include the Catwalk National Recreation Trail, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, Lake Roberts, Quemado Lake, Snow Lake and the Willow Creek Recreation Area. For the more adventurous, the three wilderness areas on the forest offer an exciting outdoor experience.
