EL PASO- A touch of the Sun City in Tinsletown at the Emmys this past Sunday. A star from the hit show "Glee" wore a dress designed by an El Pasoan to the Emmys.
This young designer has just started a career in the couture industry.
Heather Morris, from the hit television musical comedy "Glee" is rarely seen without her Mckinley High cheerleading outfit, but at Sunday's Emmys there was no trace of her character, Brittany Pierce.Morris looked chic in a dress designed by El Paso native Masai Payan.
It was a plunging neckline. The top is well constructed and then it goes into this spiral construction, very couture, very forward. The 22-year-old Americas graduate moved to LA when he finished high school to pursue a fashion design degree. During his time in LA, he created more than 30 pieces.
The Masai collection is very like drama and just very couture and Morris isn't the only starlet who has worn Masai's pieces.
"My clothes have been on Alyssa Milano, Kathy Griffin, Kristin Chenoweth and Heather Morris," says Masai.
Masai got to dress Alyssa Milano, his first star, nearly a year before finishing fashion school.
It's not just Hollywood taking notice of the budding designer. Masai has been named one of the top 10 up-and-coming designers by Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine and he's also doing a fashion show right here in his hometown.
El Paso fashion week is scheduled to feature nearly 20 designers from the area and Masai says he was thrilled when he was asked to participate.
"Of course, I love El Paso and every time I come here, it's just going back to what I know and what I believe in," says Masai.
At the show, Masai will show his fall collection along with the pieces he's designed over the past few years.
"It’s going to be a runway show and you're going to be able to see the Alyssa Milano dress. You're going to see the Heather Morris," says Masai.
His plans for the future include continuing to build his brand and eventually opening his own boutique.
"Following with what I’ve been doing and starting my own business and let's see where it goes from there," says Masai.
El Paso Fashion Week kicked off today and goes through Sunday. Masai's fashion show takes place at the Mercedes-Benzes of El Paso showroom at 1122 Airway Boulevard Saturday at 10:00 p.m. Admission is $25. To view Masai's website go to www.masaifashion.tumblr.com .
