CANUTILLO- The Canutillo School Board is meeting tonight and one of the hot topics scheduled to be discussed is the fate of an employee being held in jail on child porn charges.
Federal agents arrested 46-year-old Joachim Hees at his northeast El Paso home last week. Tonight he remains in jail with no bond. The school board will meet at district headquarters. At the end of the public meeting the trustees will go into closed session to decide if they should fire Hees. He's worked as a computer technician inside this same building for the last 7 months.
"As soon as the FBI made us aware he was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a board review tonight," says Gustavo Reveles, Canutillo ISD.
District spokesperson Gustavo Reveles says there's a possibility the district could fire Joachim Hees at tonight's board meeting. The 46-year-old is locked up in jail facing serious child porn charges. The feds say they found 71 pictures and videos of child porn on three of his home computers. The FBI seized those computers when they raided Hees’ northeast El Paso home three years ago. But he wasn't arrested until a grand jury indicted him two weeks ago.
According to court documents Hees allegedly downloaded the child porn between August 2007 and December 2008. During that time he was working with children as a teacher at Canutillo Middle School.
"To our knowledge no students were involved in any pornographic photo or video the FBI confiscated from Mr. Hees," says Reveles.
The District says Hees began working as a computer teacher at Canutillo Middle School in August 2006. Last August the District placed him on administrative leave after he was arrested on marijuana possession charges. 6 months later in February 2011, the District took him off administrative leave and gave him a new job as a computer technician at the District's offices.
"It was taking longer than we thought to resolve the drug charges so we decided to place him in the administration building as a computer technician away from children," says Reveles.
Of course we'll let you know if the School Board decides to fire Hees tonight. An interesting side note, Hees' 20-year-old son is currently serving a 2-year prison sentence after he was convicted of child porn possession last year.
