Openly gay men and women can now serve in the U.S. Military.
"Don't ask don't tell" ended at one minute after midnight Tuesday.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen will discuss the repeal of the policy banning openly gay servicemembers at a press conference Tuesday.
A Pentagon spokesperson said the military is prepared for the change, and nearly all U.S. forces have undergone training in the new law.
