El Paso- It may not surprise you to know that hundreds of El Pasoans have diabetes.
The Bi-National Diabetes Committee says about twelve percent of El Pasoans have diabetes. With that in mind, they're raising awareness about the disease by going blue. The community-wide campaign, 'Go Blue on the Border' is encouraging everyone across the Borderland to wear blue on November 14th for World Diabetes Day. This is the first time the Borderland is taking a stand to learn more about the disease.
"If you have the risk factors, if you are overweight, if you're not eating properly, if you don't take care of yourself and you have these factors even if you are Anglo and you don't have any parents that don't have the disease but if you have the risk factors the likelihood that you get diabetes is very high," says Rosalva Ruiz-Holguin, Alliance for Border Collaboratives.
The goal of the movement is to improve the health of local residents. We’ll have more news, after the break.
